New Food Pantry Opens in Valley Stream: A Beacon of Hope for the Community
On Tuesday, September 10, the Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank proudly opened the doors to its new Valley Stream food pantry, the West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support. This significant event coincided with Hunger Action Day, a nationwide initiative aimed at raising awareness about food insecurity and mobilizing communities to take action against hunger.
Location and Accessibility
The new pantry is situated at 241 Rockaway Avenue and will operate Monday through Friday, starting at 9 a.m. Notably, Tuesdays have been designated as “Military Appreciation Tuesdays,” exclusively serving veterans and active service members. This initiative reflects a commitment to honoring those who have served the nation while addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity within the community.
Addressing Food Insecurity
Jessica Rosati, Vice President for Programs and Community Services at Long Island Cares, emphasized the importance of the new pantry in her statement. “Opening the West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support is an extension of Long Island Cares that aims to provide immediate and ongoing relief to those suffering from food insecurity in Valley Stream and neighboring Nassau towns,” she stated. The pantry is designed to be a lifeline for individuals and families facing hunger, offering not just food but also a sense of community support.
Community Collaboration
The establishment of the West Nassau Center is a testament to the power of collaboration among local leaders and organizations. Rosati acknowledged the vital role played by elected officials and community partners in making this initiative a reality. Paule Pachter, President and CEO of Long Island Cares, highlighted that this new location marks the organization’s ninth pantry, bringing them closer to the communities they serve. “We look forward to working with both the local business community and government to respond to the populations’ needs,” Pachter remarked, referencing the organization’s ongoing efforts in various towns across Long Island.
The Journey to Establishment
The journey to opening the West Nassau Center began in May 2022, when New York State Assemblymember Michaelle Solages approached Long Island Cares to address the overwhelming need for food assistance at the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church. Recognizing the struggles faced by members of the Haitian and Caribbean communities, as well as other newly arrived families during the pandemic, Solages sought to create a more permanent solution.
With the support of U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, Solages helped secure $560,000 in government funding to establish a dedicated location for food assistance in Valley Stream. “Long Island Cares has been an invaluable partner in combating food insecurity and providing critical assistance to families in our community affected by the affordability crisis,” Solages stated, underscoring the pantry’s importance in addressing local needs.
Construction and Community Impact
Long Island Cares took significant steps to bring the pantry to fruition, contracting for the site in August 2022 and navigating the necessary town approvals and construction projects. Lourdes Taglialatela, the on-site program coordinator, expressed optimism about the pantry’s impact: “Our new Valley Stream satellite is a beacon of hope for residents in Western Nassau County who are combating food insecurity.” Taglialatela emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing essential support and the crucial role that satellite sites play in fulfilling their mission.
Conclusion
The opening of the West Nassau Center for Food Assistance & Community Support represents a significant advancement in the fight against food insecurity in Valley Stream and surrounding areas. By providing immediate access to food and resources, the pantry aims to uplift the community and ensure that no one goes hungry. As local leaders and organizations continue to collaborate, the hope is that this new initiative will inspire further action and support for those in need, fostering a stronger, more resilient community for all.
